Sammi Smith was an American country music singer and songwriter. She is best known for her 1971 country-pop crossover hit "Help Me Make It Through the Night," which was written by Kris Kristofferson. Smith had a total of nine Top 10 country hits between 1971 and 1976, including "I've Got to Have You," "For the Good Times," and "Don't Break the Heart That Loves You." Smith was born Jewel Faye Smith in Orange, California, on August 5, 1943. She began singing in her father's church at the age of three. She moved to Oklahoma City in her teens and began performing in local clubs. In 1965, she married country singer Norm Hamlet, and the couple moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Smith began writing songs and performing in clubs. In 1969, Smith signed with Mega Records and released her debut single, "So Long, Charlie Brown, Don't Look for Me Around." The song reached the Top 10 on the country charts, and Smith followed it with a string of Top 10 hits, including "Help Me Make It Through the Night," "I've Got to Have You," and "For the Good Times." Smith's career began to decline in the late 1970s, and she left the music business in the early 1980s. She returned to the stage in the late 1990s, and released her final album, "The Best of Sammi Smith," in 2000. Smith died on February 12, 2005, at the age of 61. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
